'From the treaty of the treason: In penance for their uprising, each district shall offer up a male and female between the ages of 12 and 18 at a public "Reaping." These Tributes shall be delivered to the custody of the Capitol. And then transferred to a public arena where they will Fight to the Death until a lone victor remains. Henceforth and forevermore this pageant shall be known as The Hunger Games.'
«Le traité de la trahison: En pénitence pour leur soulèvement, chaque district doit offrir un mâle et la femelle entre les âges de 12 et 18 ans pendant une "Moisson" publique. Ces tributs seront remis à la garde du Capitole, puis transférés dans une arène où ils se battront jusqu'à la mort, jusqu'à ce qu'un seul vainqueur ne reste. Désormais et pour toujours ce spectacle doit être connu sous le nom des Hunger Games ».
Seneca Crane: I think it's our tradition. Caesar Flickerman: Mmhmm. Seneca Crane: It comes out of a particularly painful part of our history. Caesar Flickerman: Yes. Yes. Seneca Crane: But it's been the way we've been able to heal. At first it was a reminder of the rebellion, it was a price the districts had to pay. But I think it has grown from that, I think it's uh...something that knits us all together. [the audience claps] Caesar Flickerman: This is your third year as Gamemaker. What defines your personal signature?
Primrose Everdeen: No! No! Katniss Everdeen: Shh, it's okay. It's okay, you were just dreaming. You were dreaming. Primrose Everdeen: It was me! Katniss Everdeen: I know. I know. But it's not. It's your first year, Prim. You're name's only been in there once, they're not gonna pick you. Try to go to sleep. Primrose Everdeen: I can't. Katniss Everdeen: Just try. Just try. [Prim whispers to Katniss asking for a song, she lies down and Katniss sings her the first few lines] Katniss Everdeen: You remember that song? Okay. I gotta go. Primrose Everdeen: Where? Katniss Everdeen: I just gotta go. But I'll be back. I love you.
Gale Hawthorne: What if they did? Just one year. What if everyone just stopped watching? Katniss Everdeen: But they won't, Gale. Gale Hawthorne: What if they did? What if we did? Katniss Everdeen: It won't happen. Gale Hawthorne: You root for your favorites, you cry when they get killed. It's sick! Katniss Everdeen: Yeah. Gale Hawthorne: If no one watches, then they don't have a game. It's as simple as that...What ? Katniss Everdeen: Nothing! Gale Hawthorne: Fine, laugh at me. Katniss Everdeen: I'm not laughing at you.
Gale: We could do it, you know. Take off, live in the woods. It's what we do anyway. Katniss: They'd catch us. Gale: Maybe not. Katniss: Cut out our tongues, or worse. We wouldn't make it five miles. Gale: No, I'd get five miles. I'd go that way. Katniss: I have Prim and you have your brothers. Gale: They can come too. Katniss: Prim in the woods? Gale: Well, maybe not. Katniss: I'm never having kids. Gale: I might. If I don't live here. Katniss: But you do live here. Gale: I know. But if I didn't.
Gale Hawthorne: Oh, I forgot. Here. [Gale takes out a bread roll from his bag and gives it to Katniss] Katniss Everdeen: Oh, my God! Is this real? Gale Hawthorne: Yeah! It better be. It cost me a squirrel. Gale Hawthorne: Happy Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen: And may the odds be ever in your favor. [they eat their bread in silence for moment] Katniss Everdeen: How many times has your name entered it? Gale Hawthorne: Forty two. Guess the odds aren't exactly in my favor.
[Katniss is at the market when she notices strange looking pin] Katniss Everdeen: What's this? Hob Vendor: That's uh...mockingjay. Katniss Everdeen: How much? Hob Vendor: You keep it. It's yours. Katniss Everdeen: Thank you.
[after Prim and Katniss put on their finest clothing for the reaping] Katniss Everdeen: You wanna see what I got you today? [Katniss gives the pin she got earlier at the market to Prim] Katniss Everdeen: It's a mockingjay pin, to protect you. And as long as you have it, nothing bad will happen to you. Okay? I promise.
[at the reaping after all the District 12 adults children are accounted for, the announcer for Hunger Games addresses then all] Effie Trinket: Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Happy Hunger Games. And may the odds be ever in your favor. Now, before we begin, we have a very special film brought to you all the way from the Capitol. [a film showing the how the Hunger Games began begins] Effie Trinket: Now the time has come for us to select one courageous young man and woman for the honor of representing District 12 in the 74th annual Hunger Games. As usual, ladies first.
[Effie picks a pieces of paper from a large bowl containing all the children's names, she opens it and reads out the name] Effie Trinket: Primrose Everdeen. Where are you dear? Well, come on up. [a scared looking Prim hesitates] Effie Trinket: Well, come on up! [Prim walks slowly towards the stage, suddenly Katniss steps out and calls out to Prim] Katniss Everdeen: Prim! Prim! [the guards stop Katniss from approaching Prim] Katniss Everdeen: No! I volunteer! I volunteer! I volunteer as tribute! Effie Trinket: I believe we have a volunteer.
[after volunteering to take Prim's place in the Hunger Games] Katniss Everdeen: You need to get out of here! You need to get out of here! Primrose Everdeen: No! Katniss Everdeen: Go find mom! Primrose Everdeen: No! Katniss Everdeen: Prim, go find mom! Primrose Everdeen: No! Katniss Everdeen: I'm so sorry! Primrose Everdeen: No! Katniss Everdeen: Go find mom! Primrose Everdeen: No! [Gale steps out his line and walks up them and takes Prim away as she cries]
[as a nervous and shocked looking Katniss approaches the stage] Effie Trinket: District 12's very fist volunteer. Come on up. Come on, dear. [Katniss walks up onto the stage] Effie Trinket: What's your name? Katniss Everdeen: Katniss Everdeen. Effie Trinket: Well, I bet my hat that was your sister, wasn't it? Katniss Everdeen: Yes. Effie Trinket: Let's have a big hand for our very first volunteer, Katniss Everdeen. [Effie claps but there's silence from the audience as they hold up their hand in tribute to Katniss]
[after Katniss has been introduced on stage] Effie Trinket: And now for the boys. [Effie picks out another paper and reads out the name] Effie Trinket: Peeta Mellark. [Peeta walks up and steps onto the stage] Effie Trinket: Here we are. Our tributes from District 12. Well, come on you two, shake hands. [Katniss recognizes Peeta and in a flashback, we see Peeta standing outside a bakery when he sees Katniss sitting alone, starving in the rain] Effie Trinket: Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor. [Katniss and Peeta shake hands]
Katniss Everdeen: Prim, I don't have much time. Prim, listen. You're gonna be okay. Don't take any extra food from them, it isn't worth putting in your name more times, okay? Listen, Gale will bring you game, you can sell cheese from your goat. Primrose Everdeen: Just try to win, if you can. Katniss Everdeen: Of course. Any maybe I can, I am smart, you know. Primrose Everdeen: You can hunt. Katniss Everdeen: Exactly. [Prim gives Katniss the mockingjay pin Katniss had give to her earlier] Primrose Everdeen: To protect you. Katniss Everdeen: Thank you. [she hugs and kisses Prim]
Katniss Everdeen: You can't tune out again. Katniss' Mother: I won't. Katniss Everdeen: No, you can't. Not like when dad died. I won't be there anymore, you're all she has. No matter what you feel, you have to be there for her. Do you understand? Don't cry. ... Don't cry. Don't.
[Gale comes into the room that Katniss has been put in and he immediately hugs Katniss] Katniss Everdeen: I'm fine. Gale Hawthorne: Yeah, I know. Katniss Everdeen: I am. Gale Hawthorne: Listen to me, you're stronger than they are. You are. Get to a bow. Katniss Everdeen: I may not have a bow... Gale Hawthorne: You will if you get to show 'em how good you are. They just want a good show, that's all they want. If they don't have a bow, then you make one, okay? You know how to hunt. Katniss Everdeen: Animals. Gale Hawthorne: There's no difference, Katniss. Katniss Everdeen: They're twenty four of us, Gale, and only one comes out. Katniss Everdeen: Yeah, and it's gonna be you. [a guard comes into the room to get Gale] Peacekeeper #1: Okay. Katniss Everdeen: Take care of 'em, Gale. Whatever you do, don't let them starve! [Katniss hugs Gale again before the guard ushers Gale out of the room] Peacekeeper #1: Let's go. Gale Hawthorne: I'll see you soon, okay? [Gale is taken out of the room]
Effie Trinket: Two hundred miles per hour and you can barely feel a thing. I think it's one of the wonderful things about this opportunity, that even though you're here and even though it's just for a little while, you get to enjoy all of this.... I'm going to find Haymitch. He's probably in the bar car. [she gets up and leaves]
Peeta Mellark: Have you ever met him? Haymitch? [Katniss doesn't reply] Peeta Mellark: You know, Katniss, he is our mentor. He did win this thing once. [Katniss continues to ignore Peeta] Peeta Mellark: Look, you know, if you don't wanna I understand. But I just don't think there's anything wrong with getting a little bit of help.
Peeta Mellark: Okay. So, uh....so when do we start? Haymitch Abernathy: Woh. Woh. You're so eager. Most of you aren't in such a hurry. Peeta Mellark: Yeah, I wanna know what the plan is. You're our mentor, you're supposed to... Haymitch Abernathy: Mentor? Peeta Mellark: Yeah. Our mentor, you're supposed to tell us how to get sponsors and give us advice. Haymitch Abernathy: Oh. Okay. Um...embrace the probability of your imminent death. And know, in your heart, that there's nothing I can do to save you. Katniss Everdeen: So why are you here then? [holding up his glass of alcohol] Haymitch Abernathy: Oh, the refreshments. Peeta Mellark: Okay, I think that's enough of that. [Peeta tries to get the drink out of Haymitch hand but Haymitch stops him and holds him with his foot on his chest] Haymitch Abernathy: You made me spill my drink. It's a brand new pants. You know, I think I'll go finish this in my room. [Haymitch gets up and leaves] Peeta Mellark: He's gonna come around. [Peeta gets up to go after Haymitch] Katniss Everdeen: It's no use! Peeta Mellark: I'm gonna go talk to him.
[in the morning as they continue to ride on the train, Katniss notices Peeta is talking to Haymitch over breakfast] Haymitch Abernathy: You'd freeze to death first. Peeta Mellark: No, cause I'd have a lot of fire. Haymitch Abernathy: No, that's a good way to get killed.
Katniss Everdeen: What's a good way to get killed? Haymitch Abernathy: Oh, joy! Why don't you join us? I was just giving some life saving advice. Katniss Everdeen: Like what? Peeta Mellark: Oh, I was just asking about how to find shelter Haymitch Abernathy: Which would come in handy if in fact you were still alive. Katniss Everdeen: How do you find shelter? Haymitch Abernathy: Pass the jam? [Katniss ignores his request] Katniss Everdeen: How do you find shelter? Haymitch Abernathy: Give me a chance to wake up, sweetheart. This mentoring is very taxing stuff. [he pours alcohol into his coffee] Haymitch Abernathy: Can you pass the marmalade? [suddenly in anger, Katniss stabs a knife into the dining table] Effie Trinket: That is mahogany! Haymitch Abernathy: Look at you, you just killed a place mat.
Haymitch Abernathy: You really wanna know how to stay alive? You get people to like you. [Katniss looks surprised at his comment] Haymitch Abernathy: Oh! Not what you were expecting. Well, when you're in the middle of the games, and you're starving or freezing, some water, a knife or even some matches can mean the difference between life and death. And those things only come from sponsors, and to get sponsors, you have to make people like you. And right now, sweetheart, you're not off to a real good start. [as they enter the Capitol, Peeta gets up and look out the train window] Peeta Mellark: There it is. It's huge! It's incredible. [as the train is pulling to a stop they see crowd of people waiting outside cheering them, Peeta smiles and waves at them, he turns to Katniss to join him] Peeta Mellark: Come on! Come on! [Haymitch turns to Katniss] Haymitch Abernathy: You better keep this knife, he knows what he's doing.
[we're back to the first scene we saw, where the Head Gamemaker is being interviewed in front of a live audience] Caesar Flickerman: So now that you've seen them, what do you think about this year's crop of recruits? Are there any surprises that we can expect this year? Seneca Crane: It's really hard to tell just from a reaping, but I think this is a very interesting mix. Caesar Flickerman: Yeah. Seneca Crane: Whenever you have a volunteer from an outlying district, that's something you uh...you can't ignore.
[as Katniss is made to have a makeover, she sees two of the stylist whispering something about her] Katniss Everdeen: What's that? What's that? Flavius: We're just saying we might need to hose you down again before we take you to Cinna.
[Katniss meets Cinna] Cinna: That was one of the bravest things I've ever seen, for your sister. My name is Cinna. Katniss Everdeen: Katniss. Cinna: I'm sorry that this happened to you and I'm here to help you in any way that I can. Katniss Everdeen: Most people just congratulate me. Cinna: Well, I don't see the point in that. So tonight they have the tribute parade, they're gonna take you out and show you off to the world. Katniss Everdeen: So you're here to make me look pretty? Cinna: I'm here to help you make an impression. Now usually they dress people in the clothes from their district. Katniss Everdeen: Yeah, ours was coal miners. Cinna: Yeah, but I don't wanna do that. I wanna do something that they're gonna remember. Did they explain about trying to get sponsors? Katniss Everdeen: Yeah, but I'm not very good at making friends. Cinna: We'll see. I just think somebody that brave shouldn't be dressed up in some stupid costume now, should they? Katniss Everdeen: I hope not.
[at the tribute parade, talking into the TV camera, commentating on the parade] Caesar Flickerman: Over one hundred thousand people craning to get a glimpse at this year's tributes. And the sponsors get to see the tributes for the first time. The importance of this moment cannot be overstated.
